Warning Signs

Victims of domestic violence or sexual assault may show the following signs:

• Symptoms of depression or anxiety
• Panic attacks, sleeplessness, or suicidal feelings
• Post-traumatic stress reactions
• Feelings of isolation
• Drugs and/or alcohol abuse
• Bruises, grab marks, lacerations, or fractures
• Repeat visits to the emergency room with chronic injuries or vague complaints

An abusive spouse or partner may

• Insist on staying close
• Be overly solicitous or eager to explain the victims injuries

Statistics

• A rape occurs every 4 minutes, according to the FBI.
• One out of three women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime.
• Every 15 seconds, a woman is beaten in the United States.
• According to the FBI, men commit 95% of all assaults on women.
• Every minute, approximately 6 children are reported abused and neglected in the U.S.
• Over 6 million women a year are the victims of domestic violence in the U. S.
• Between 3 and 10 million children witness domestic violence every year in the United States
